OK, the standard resolution of a TV is like 250x325 or something like that. Can TV's that are NOT HDTV's display a higher resolution? Isn't that what S-Video is for? The reason I am asking is because I just got a used Sony 46" projection TV for $225 and was wondering if I could get a decent resolution out of it when hooked up to my PC via S-Video.

A 46" projection TV for $225? Goddamn, I paid pushing double that for my 27" Wega! :Q

I don't know off hand what standard TV resolutions are, but short of maybe HDTV TV's make terrible monitors for anything other than gaming.

The other reason I am asking is I just picked up a PS2 and want to know if the S-Video cable is worth it. Is there really any difference?

if the tv has an s video input, then yes its worth it. you don't get any higher resolution by using s video over crappy composite, but the color seperation and apparent sharpness of the picture will be much better.

I've always known the average TV to have 525x375, the actual limit is a bit higher (720x525?) but TVs are usually phosphor limited.

hmm, a standard NTSC signal is 480 lines interlaced.

HDTVs and other nice ones can do 480 lines progressive (non-interlaced) plus HD 1080i.

Unless you have component imputs you're limited to NTSC.

sorry :(

And yes, by far use S-Video if you have it. better color separation=better picture, better clarity. I noticed a marked improvement with my PS2 (uses 480i BTW...no progressive scan :(

Yeah, Demon-Xanth's answer sounds good. Anyways, that's what I've always understood S-Video as offering, better picture and color presentation. Most of the time, the better picture quality is noticeable using S-Video instead.;)

Wow, those have really come down then. I believe my Dad paid close to double that for his Trinitron TV several years back
