I would like to purchase a TV tuner but i got some question i need to ask before buying it

1)My graphic card atm is a Geforce 6800gt, with only 2 DVI entrance and a tv-out ( it look like a s-video plug ).When i plug my tv tuner card...i will need to hook up my tv tuner to the geforce card right?

2)Can i record with a tv tuner card? IF so.Is a special program required to record?( is this program come with the the tv tuner card you purchase? )

3)iF I CAN record, can i program the program(or pc, i dont know) so it record at a specific date.?

4)I see there is lot of brand..some are cheaper...some are more expensive. If i buy a more expensive one...will i get a better picture quality out of it or all tv tuner will give me the same result for picture quality?

thanks in advance if you can answer these questions.

as for ur first question, i dont think u need to connect the tv tuner to the video card. if it's external, just plug it into a usb port. if it's internal, u just plug into a pci slot and u might also need to connect an audio cable from the tuner to the soundcard.

1. No, you don't have to hook them together

2/3/4. Yes, you can record, the biggest difference in cards out there is Hardware Encoding Vs Software encoding. Do yourself a favor and buy the Hauppauge Win-TV PVR-150, It has everything you need and nothing you don't. If you buy the retail version, it comes with some software, but you should really try SageTV or Windows Media Center Edition 2005 If you want to do Tivo Functions (like scheduling recordings)

4) Some of the more expensive cards do hardware mpeg2 encoding. This way is you record you don't really use any Cpu power. With a basic ATI tv card in order to record you probably need at least an 800 mhz P3 to record in mpeg-1 and no dropped frames.

If you plan on doing alot of recording and want to save it in mpeg2 then get something with hardware mpeg2.

Here is the Tv tuner that got my attention:

http://usa.asus.com/products/vga/tvfm_7135/overview.htm

Its only $45 canadian currency.

Usually you hook up the audio cable to where the CD audio cable goes.

Staples.ca has the PVR250 for $120 CND.

and you won't need to worry about hooking the audio cable. I've got a couple with use with BeyondTV.

i've had a usb tv tuner before and all i had to do was plug the coax cable from the cable box to the coax input on the tv tuner... then plug the tv tuner into the usb port. video outputs to monitor and sound outputs to speakers. i had a wintv usb thingie.

looking at the tv tuner u r interested in, after plugging it into a pci slot, u will likely need to connect an audio cable (i assume it will be included) to your soundcard.

The problem, is by looking at this card http://usa.asus.com/products/vga/tvfm_7135/7135_l.jpg i dont see any audio connector that can fit into my sound blaster live 5.1.I see 2 cable exist and a s-video exit..and my sound card just have a few exit smaller than these and a remote contoller exit.

The 3 external connectors are probably, cable-in antenna, fm-Antenna and S-Video in. The audio connector is the white thing at the top of the card. Larger Picture

Personally, I'd go with a Hauppage or ATI tv tuner. The new Theater Pro chip cards from ATI are looking very nice.
