question about traveling to another country

if i have a US passport and i'm traveling to another country for 31 days, do i need a visa? how do i get one if i do need it?

i'm confused... so i don't need a visa if i stay 30 days or less? and applying for a visa will cost me over $100 just for 1 extra day? i think i'm gonna try changing my flight departure to make it a 30 day stay instead so i don't have to deal w/ visas....
