Question about transferring ownership of XP Pro OEM

Last night I purchased an XP Pro OEM with COA & booklet, along with a 27 gig hard drive from someone on the FS/FT forum.

This morning he has informed me that he went ahead and installed XP to that drive and activated it by phone for me. I don't know why he did this, I suppose he thought it was as a courtesy but I am not using that drive with the XP installation I'm going to do, I'm going to put it on a new 160.

Am I going to have any trouble when I call MS to activate it? He said something about just ghosting the drive over but I want a fresh installation and besides that, you ARE allowed to switch hard drives are you not?

When you install it, just call up Microsoft and they'll let you re-activate it. They're supposed to be pretty cool about reinstalling WinXP.

I had to call microsoft to activate a win xp i bought off someone on fs/ft once...

No problems at all, they were surprizingly easy to talk to.

Okay thanks, that's kind of what I would have thought...he was kind of acting like I'd need to tell them a story which is why I got a little concerned. I'll just tell them, that computer was dismantled, this is a new one, which is 100% true.

Yeah. They know that people are already annoyed by the activation process so I don't think they really want to cause any more problems for their users.

Try and get a hold of XP Corporate Edition CD, it does not require you to activate. As long as your COA is valid, you should be legal.
