Question about transfering files

At home I set up just a simple workgroup using windows to facilitate sharing files and such, and beyond that I'm a total networking noob.

If I have two computers that are physically next to each other, is there some way to just hook up a usb cable or something and move files back and forth?

If yes, can I still do this if one computer is on XP and another is mac?

These are probably stupid questions, but I'm pretty ign'ant about this stuff =(

You can do it via smart USB cable yes, won't work with just a regular USB cable though. It can also be done via Firewire. Really the easiest way to do it though (presuming the Mac is running OS X) is to just put it on the network with the Windows machine. The Mac is perfectly capable of accessing & being accessed via SMB (a standard that both Windows & Mac use) for things like transferring files.

Thanks for the response ^^

I think I'll look into the smart USB cable solution. I know the mac can be put on the network, but the reason I want to be able to do this is because I am at school now.

Will each computer simply see the other computer the same way they would see an external hard drive?

You'd have to enable file sharing on both PCs and set up folders that you want to be shared. In Windows, a look at the Windows Help for information on File Sharing will give you more information.

Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is allowed to be shared.
