yes, you would need the HSF or at minimum a fan on the door of the case blowing out. Just don't operate the system without the door on :D

That case is a little odd. If I am not mistaken, that vent is to draw fresh air to the cpu hsf which then pushes the fresh air across the heatsink. I would imagine that they made the purple adapter large enough to fit most stock hsf's.

I've heard that this type of funnel to bring cool air directly onto the HSF can be effective. The challenge is to know if the location of the funnel will work with the motherboard and CPU HSF combination that you have chosen. Any ATX motherboard will fit in the case, but as I'm sure you know, the various varieties of chipsets and motherboard manufacturers have different layouts.
