Question about these Xeon's that can supposedly be used in place of C2D's/C2Q's

So I'm seeing a lot of people suggesting that Xeon's can be used in place of some of the hard to find 45nm C2D's and C2Q's, but when I look them up, they show as being socket 771, instead of 775. Will they still work in a 775 motherboard? What's this difference mean?

There are socket 775 and socket 771 Xeons with similar model #s. Also, some of those may be a misprint.

When people suggest replacement Xeons they're talking about the socket 775 versions. You would need a server socket 771 board to use the other ones.
