hi everybody

a while ago i read up on all that video jargon like 720p, 1080i, HD etc... but i forgotten what they mean and am out of touch. I just bought a dell 2405 and it should be here soon. I'm thinking of getting an XBOX 360 soon as well, as my grades aren't quite bad enough enough yet. I have read that when people try to play ninendo or watch TV on these things, the picture quality is crap because they monitor has too high of resoltuion. Will the XBOX look great on this monitor, or am i in for dissapointment. I was hoping to take advantage of the fact taht the XBOX 360 is HD right? My normal TV is not HD, it is not even widecreen.

thanks for any advice

well the monitor supports hd so anything in hd quality 1080i will look good and if the xbox 360 supports hd it should look great. just sum t.v is shown in sd or 720p than they have to make it smaller when displaying it on a 1080i monitor. old consoles are going to look like crap pretty much too due to that the native res on those games are 640x480 now imaging stretching that to 1920x1200 it's gonna look terrrible.

ok, thanks

so does resolution have to do with 720p, 1080i stuff? or is that just more related to the refresh rate of monitor / tv.

And is the poor picture quality of old consoles on the 2405 a function of resloution? if so, is it the increased resloution of the XBOX 360 that will make it look good on the 2405?

1080p is a standard HD res as well == 1920x1080 which will go on 1920x1200 easily.

ohhh
so the 1080, 720 stuff, stands for resloutions, that clears up a lot, thanks

well since the XBOX 360 puts out a resloution that has less vertical pixels than the monitor, does that mean that there will be bands on the top and bottom of the screen?

if you're feeding the monitor 1080 lines out of 1200, the bands will be very small

No. You can have the monitor scale it to fit the screen, or keep the native size (meaning it'll be a small picture on the overall screen).

When I had mine I hooked up a Gamecube, PS2, and Xbox to it and thought they all looked great on the monitor. The 360 would only look better I would think.

It would be the VGA, unless the Xbox360 has DVI, no sure of the exact specs.

I recently learned that the letter after the number (like 1080i) designates if the monitor uses interlacing or progressing scanning. Interlacing is bad because it practically halves the framerates(?) while progressive is better but more expensive.

If I'm not mistaken, the pictures that were floating around is of an XBox 360 hooked up to a 2405FP using components.
