Question about the word "Oriental"

YMMV on whether its offensive.

Personally, I don't really care but I just find it strange to describe an asian as oriental.

what's wrong wit saying asian?

Because, in reality, in this country, the term "Asian" seems to mean Mongoloid people, when in actuality, they only constitute about half or less of the true Asian population.

i don't think it is offensive, and frankly, i find it weird that it was find up until about a year ago, and all of the sudden it was offensive. wtf.

So which asian people are being excluded?

I don't really care either, but I tend to get to know the person and say they are from Pakistan, China, Taiwan, etc.. instead of labeling people orietnals.

Except AndyHui, I just call him HongKongese. 😛

There are many more, just search for "term offensive Oriental" in google.

And i'm not trying to argue with anyone. This is the way that people feel. This is called being Politically Correct. Don't fight me on it, I didn't make the rules.

*edit*

Like I stated in the shrimp thread, it's a matter of the origin of the word's use.
For those too lazy to read the links, Oriental was once used as a derogatory label for those who lived in the Orient.
As it stands, Oriental is acceptable as an adjective for objects but not for people.

For an analogy, take the word "negro" meaning "black" in Spanish. Call any black person a negro and you'll end up with a fight on your hands. Is negro a bad word? No. But it's not politically correct in certain usage.

Oriental is the opposite of Occidental. Occident pretty much means "west." Orient means "East."
Honestly, saying that someone is Oriental really is just saying they're Eastern. Over time it evolved to be construed as a racial slur, but it seems to be a result of political correctness. In addition, if "Asian" is a vague term, "Oriental" is even more vague....

i hate topics like this... makes me think it's impossible to refer to someone who is a different race, as that.
when describing someone, it's so easy to narrow it down when you say the person is black, or asian.... but what the hell to say without pissing someone off? really stupid. i wouldn't care. it's the year 2003, times change.. call me whatever.. 😛
but it bugs me how others seem to be offended so easily.... bah.

Again, Russians, Iranians, Turks, Pakistanis, Indians, Afghans, basically Caucasoids who have very little in common with people from the Ori... with the exception of perhaps cultural and spiritual links between Afghan-Pak-India (thanks largely to King Ashoka who spread Buddhism).

Asian can be defined by anyone descending from the following countries:

Indonesia
Japan
China
Philliphines
Afghanistan
India
Pakistan
Mauritius
Mariana's
Thailand
Sri Lanka
Mongolia
Kazhkstan
Burma (Myanmar?)
Korea
Maldives
Uzbekistan

See how specific you're being?

Personally I think the reason "Asians" statistically score so high on SAT's is because the term "Asian" does not specifically mean chinese/japanese/pacific islander, but also Asian Indians.

if used to refer to people its out dated like the term negro.

well, i remember calling a girl negroe once when i was in 2nd grade. she almost kicked my a55. it wasn't my fault though, my dad referred to them as that and i would see commericals for the united negroe fund, and they said it on t.v. so i thought it was cool. but i guess it wasn't cuz she got all pissy when i said that in class.

uh... chinese and japanese score about the same as asian indians (really high)... all three are *not* on the same level as pacific islanders however.

Actually, no. 🙂

Southeast Asia is like Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, etc.

Afghan-Pak-India is South Asia
Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan is Central Asia
Turkey to Iran is West Asia
Russia is ... i don't know, probably a bit of Central Asia, but once you get to Mongolia, the racial/cultural composition vastly changes.
