Question about the uplink port on a hub

I thought I recalled reading somewhere that switching a port to uplink mode on a network hub just switched the send and receive lines. If this is true then could I set a port as uplink and then use a crossover cable to connect a pc to the hub (since the lines would be switched back)? Could I also just run a crossover cable between one hub to another with neither having an uplink port?

Thanks for any replies.

Yes, you can use a crossover into an uplink port. Keep in mind that many hubs have a shared port, you can use either or but not both.

As far as connecting two hubs directly with a crossover... I dunno, I've never played with cascading hubs. I think it could work, though.

The uplink does the crossover for you.

Hub to hub - one uplink port to one regular port, regular cable
Computer to hub uplink port - use the crossover cable.
If you have a hub cascade you may need to use a crossover cable to connect a computer to the top level depending on the wire scheme used.

You can also use the crossover cable to connect 2 like devises, 2 computers, 2 hubs (no uplink port).

Thanks. That's all I wanted to know. I've got two regular cables and a crossover, but need three regulars. Basically I'm going to switch the uplink switch so that I can use the crossover as a regular cable. :)

Thanks guys.
