question about the TV show The Shield

I must have missed an episode in season 2 or 3 - what happened to the ex-Assistant Police Chief Ben Gilroy?

he covered for Vic for a long time. Next thing I see is that he was released from jail and broke off his monitoring anklet. He then tried to record a conversation incriminating Vic. they sent him to Mexico and he wound up dead.

why did he get thrown in jail in the first place?

got caught for diverting police away from high crime areas and then buying the property at the lowest value. dont know exactly how though

gilroy was diverting police resources from an area so land prices would go down and he and his accomplice would be able to buy lots of land cheap.

i think they explained it in the last 2 episodes of season 1. after that i think he only had one episode in season 2 where he got sent to mexico. then one of the strike team mentioned offhand that he died broke in mexico in some other episode.
