Question about the Sirius Radio I have and moving it from car to car...

So i got a Sirius radio for free from a friend. The only thing i need to buy is a docking station which comes with the antenna and holder... Does anyone know if i can just move the entire docking station with antenna to another vehicle quickly? Or is it a permanent installation? Not sure exactly how it works...

Thanks,
Rich

It really depends on the install. The very first Sirius unit that I got had a docking station that was hard wired into the power running to the accessory outlets. You couldn't just unplug and move it. And the docking station itself was actually screwed into the console area of my truck. The antenna was just a magnet you stuck on the roof of your car.

You had the option though of just plugging in a cigarette adapter and velcro taping the docking station down.

Personally I'd just get a starmate and a second car kit and not even worry about the docking station.

Yeah, i was thinking of using velcro... so that I can rip it out if i need too. I intend on plugging it into my cigarette lighter as well. One question I do have though is how do you connect the antenna from the docking station to your roof? Do you just snake it out the door, how do you do that without water and stuff leaking through?

And what is different about the starmate, it doesn't need a docking station?

When I swap from car to car I usually just run the antenna along the A pillar trim and then out the door. It's so small that the rubber seals in the door surround it and no water leaks in. At least in three seperate vehicles I never had an issue with leaks.

I like the starmate because it is smaller and doesn't need a docking station. It has an FM modulator built in and the power and antenna plug right into it. It also has a nice suction cup mounting arm that you can stick right to the windshield.

If you have seperate car kits you can just move the starmate back and forth in a matter of seconds.

Ah suction cups... Perfect for moving from car to car... Is it possible to pop the antenna on and off the roof? If so using the starmate would enable me to go from car to car right?
