... I wanted to overclock my modded Connect3d 9500np and thus thougth it would be a good idea to replace whatever connects the GPU to the HSF with some ArcticSilver.
Now, I read somewhere that this could impose a problem, alas I cant remember what the problem was. It had something to do with the thermal pad being thick and that HSF and GPU wont connect or something like that.

Can someone educate me on the matter, I'd really appreciate it!

Yeah, there may be a shim around the GPU that needs to be milled/lapped so the HSF can sit properly once the pad is removed.

A close inspection is needed.

Better still, apply a very thin coat of AS and test fit the HSF. Remove and see if any AS has transfered.

When you remove the HS+F you will notice there is a metal rim around the gpu that is slightly higher than the core. The trick is to apply a thick coat of ASII paste to insure good contact.

I'm still using my ripped-up TIM pad from my resistor hack on my 9500 non-pro. I have'nt bothered replacing it because my core will run 360MHz no problem and I keep it at 330MHz. The TIM may not be the best solution for extreme overclocking, but it's a hell of a site better than ASIII that does'nt make good contact.

carefully remove the shim with a razor blade, or carefully lap it to the same level as the core. either process should give you good results.
