Question about the Price is Right

I was watching The Price is Right several years ago, and this lady was playing one of the games (I can't remember which one) and she wound up being negative -100 in the game to which Bob Barker told her that she had to pay them that amount and pointed somewhere and told her to go talk to those people.

I was shocked when I saw it...it didn't seem like a joke. Can that really happen?

They never make one pay the difference. Why not make the games in absolute value? Then everyone wins.

I wish I knew what game she was playing, but I believe it was one where she had to keep betting money or something...
