SPOILERS

When Sarah and Borden are fighting in their apartment, she keeps saying "I know what you are!"

What is she referring to? She doesn't know about the twin, so she couldn't be referring to that.

Because she thought he was cheating on her. He also introduced Falon as his engineer.

yeah, I think she's just saying how she knows how crazy he is about magic ... what his wife hated about him.
that's the other thing, I can't see why the twins couldn't just stick with whoever they liked instead of swapping ... yeah yeah it was to keep on their toes but still!

great movie btw!

This movie was good up until it became a sci-fi flick.

I mean I still enjoyed it, but it just became stupid once I realized they were cloning stuff.

I kinda thought the same. But I guess it was a necessary evil.

As written, neither twin had a fully complete or independent personality, for example how they couldn't ever settle which knot was tied for Danton/Jackman's wife. They had to keep switching places because both needed to be Borden.

> "When Sarah and Borden are fighting in their apartment, she keeps saying "I know what you are!" "

I'd say someone who cared more about magic than her. True since the twin who loved her wouldn't or couldn't give up the shared life and split apart from his twin.

I disagree that it became a sci-fi flick. It was always about magic. Angier having to basically kill himself everytime he did the trick was insane.

I loved how the movie wanted you to guess the ending the entire time. About half way through I knew the device made 2 copies of whatever was in it and that Angier purposely was killing one of the copies. Never would have guessed that Borden was actually the Borden twins.

For Angier's last magic trick, he steps in clones himself, but how does he control where the clone appears?

Calibrating the machine.

Yeah, I think he went back to Tesla after walking outside the house and saw all the clone hats and cats for the first time and reworked where the clone should appears.

Tesla mentions that Alley wrote a thorough set of instructions. One can assume that calibration was part of those instructions.

I just finished this last night-good flick. Id like to read up more on Tesla. He sounds like an interesting man.

I tried to ignore the "cloning" because I thought it was going to be some misdirection. I didn't realize they were serious about it until the very end of the movie which kind of disappointed me. I would have preferred a rational explanation.

I just watched it. Very good movie. However, just like with the Illusionist, I guessed the tricks (the cloning and the twins) very early in the movie. Both movies gave plenty of clues. I'm not sure how someone could actually get to the end without figuring out everything that has been happening.

Excellent blend of different genres (mystery, sci-fi, drama)...

edit: oh and I really don't think the wife ever knew. I think she was just going nuts because her man would act different every day.

I felt the same way... especially since it was set in the 19th century. I wish they kept it within the realm of possibility, but then I suppose that would have made the trick impossible.

At what point did you guess the cloning?

As soon as he tried the cat and nothing seemed to happen. Although I should have guessed earlier because we can remember seeing the top hats in the very beginning. But as soon as they showed the top hats and the extra cat, the whole movie clicked and I knew that a clone of the magician had been killed. I suspected the twin nearly from the introduction of Fallon (when someone said that Fallon doesn't talk much), but it was absolutely confirmed as when Fallon was kidnapped via Bale's reaction.

edit: I'll tell you one thing I never suspected...that David Bowie played Tesla. :Q

I just saw this movie the other night... was wondering about a couple things that maybe I missed...

1. Why did he have to keep killing himself(his clone)? Why couldn't he just create one clone and use him repeatedly?

2. Angier went to Tesla because that is what Borden had written on the paper in exchange for his engineer/twin. Why did Borden know about Tesla?

Tesla made a machine for Borden. It just didn't do what Angier's did.

1. The machine wasn't really a teleporter it was a tele-cloner. It only worked by creating a clone at a distance, leaving the original in the starting location.

Each night the (current) original died, and a new clone lived on.

2. There was a scene mid-movie of Borden attending a science exhibition with Tesla. (edit) and like FilmCamera said, Tesla made a machine for Borden, it just didn't do anything (a light show to dress up the twin trick).

Whoever went into the machine died. His clone would be just as aware of this fact as he was, because they're essentially the same person.

Borden had Tesla make him a machine that was a flash and bling, but did nothing else.

When they showed all the hats outside i kind of thought it was cloning, and when I saw the 2 cats I was like ... "please don't tell me they are cloning people, that would ruin the movie for me ..."

and then it ended up being cloning, and it did put a huge dampening on the movie for me.

it was funny too earlier on cause I said to my girlfriend "christian bale's partner dude kind of looks like him" heh and it turned out to be him.
