Do not read further if you haven't watched it yet.

What was in the envelope Leo gave the therapist chick? Not the one he mailed to her, the brown one he told her to open if something happens to him or if he tells her to open it? It's the only loose end that I can't figure out.

<retard>INFERNAL AFFAIRS WAS BETTER </retard>

now that we got that out of the way... I'm pretty sure it was everything he learned about the mole

I'm guessing it was info regarding who the mole was (Damon) and possibly who to contact (Wahlberg) to deal with the situation.

I think the fact that we never actually saw it is part of the mystery, but it has something to do with Mark Wahlberg's character killing him at the end. (Think it was instructions to find/send him info about the whole thing)

If it was the mole info, then why did he have to send her another envelope with the tape? He could've just told her to open the first one.

Proof for her to hear with her own ears. Was she going to believe the info in the other envelope (to be opened post martum) about her boyfriend (Damon) if she didn't have proof? True he could have mailed it all at one time but he wasn't expecting to die, just a "just in case"

It also could have contained his personal files (identity/records, etc..). he knew that if/when sh!t went sour, Damon would erase his file (which is what happened). he gave that to her so that his existence would be known after he died, or after Damon was killed he could still get his identity back.

Didn't he give her the first envelope before the second undercover cop was outed (but after Quillen was killed)? So he didn't know who the mole was, but he lost all his contacts.

yep. i was thinking that it was all of the info regarding matt damon, and to only give it to marky mark. it's the only way he would have known to wack him at the end. ;)

Not necessarily, but yeah, that does make sense.

This was the first thing I thought of, and is really the only conclusion that a) makes sense and b) is obvious.

Word has it that, if there's ever a follow-up to The Departed, it's going to revolve around Dignam.

Guys, the 1st envelope that was MAILED was not intended for her, it was sent to Damon's character. Leo had no idea that she lived there.

I have drawn some conclusions as to Mark Wahlburg's character...one was that he was a mole himself but placed deeper than Matt Damon's character. Remember when the other guy made the statement that there were multiple moles in the department and that Jack Nicklaus's character had more than one guy on the payroll? Mark Wahlburg could have been one of those guys tying up loose ends. On the other hand, he could have been contacted by the girl (i.e. she handed him the files she got from Leo's character) and he offed Matt Damon to show testicular fortitude. Who knows...made for a cliffhanger ending that's for sure.

You've read too deeply into it.

The cop that Damon offed in the elevator was the other mole. Wahlberg killed Damon because he was keeping his word to get revenge on him for killing his boss and his agent. Nothing less, nothing more. He was righting the scales again.

I agree. Interesting, but reading too much into. The other mole was already exposed (out of the middle of fvcking nowhere, mind you) at the end, so no reason to assume Dingam was a mole. I think he was just righting the scales (Damon got his boss/buddy killed, got him fired, was scum, fingerbangs Affleck on the side, etc). He was just setting things right; 'cause he's hard like that.
