Question about the memory on my Toshiba m35x-s109

does anyone know if this laptop is supposed to have 32mb or 64mb of video memory? i understand it is shared memory, correct? right now, i have the default 256mb sodimm, and when i go to the device manager, it shows i have 224mb ram (i think the bios says the same). that'd make me think that there is 32mb ram is being used for video. however, when i go to dxdiag, it tells me that there is 64mb video memory. how can i tell for sure how much memory the onboard graphics has?

Well, it definitely sounds like you're only using 32MB for the VRAM, but it does support up to 64MB. I would check the Display Properties>Settings Tab>Advanced and see what it says under the Adapter tab there. Otherwise, you can use a 3-rd part program like Sandra or Everest Home Edition (<--Great proggie) as another method overification.

Please report back. I was curious myself. I would love to be able to throttle it up to 64MB if it is actually using 32MB but I did not find somehow to do it.

hmm.... in the display settings... it says 64mb. could it be that the laptop actually came with 32mb of dedicated vram, and is taking another 32mb from system ram? hmmm. well, i am off to try your other suggestion

strange. i ran everest, and it sees 222mb ram (which is how much the bios reports today). so 256 - 222 = 34..... 34? anyway, everest also reports that there is 64mb video memory. any ideas as to thats going on here?

I would call Toshiba for a definite answer. It seems as though the built-on 32MB is a possibility, but something I have never seen before. Have you investigated the BIOS to see what VRAM options are there? Maybe try adjusting it from there if possible and see what changes result. Maybe if you back the VRAM down to 32MB (supposedly) in the BIOS, it will stop using system RAM and we'll have our answer. Investigate away, now I'm curious!

I saw nothing in the BIOS for the Video settings. The BIOS was the most sparse BIOS I ever saw. I don't know where this could be configurable.

Wow....I guess that's why it sells for $500, eh? I knew cheap laptops were cheap, but you'd think they would give you some notion of options.
Sounds like your only other resort is to call Toshiba....

According to the spec sheet on the Toshiba webstie, it's an intel 855GME chipset, 16MB-64MB (DVMA) shared Video Memory. Hope this helps a little bit.

well... what i would like to know is, exactly how much ram is being allocated to video? the bios seems to be reporting 32mb missing... so i am guessing 32mb is being shared. in windows however, everything is pointing to 64mb. odd.
