Question about the M5 "M-mode". . .

On Top Gear Clarkson said it goes from "producing" 400hp to 507hp. How does it do that exactly? Is the rev limiter just raised from where it produces 400hp to 500? Or how else can it do it?

Probably more aggressive timing, more air flow + more fuel = more horsepower.

That's the car I'm aiming for next summer.

tried googling to no avail.

I'm guessing something from the ecu controlling the amount of fuel and air entering the engine.

The E60?

Also, after watching the top gear ep, why wouldn't you just leave it in M-mode?

Yes. The computer has several profiles to choose from for each little bit. They're normally selected by all the suspension and shift and etc. control buttons. "M" mode just kicks the computer in the ass and tells it to switch everything to what BMW determined to be optimal performance settings. It also changes the engine's fuel/air management profile - by default it's set up to run for economy and comfort, which results in the lower horsepower rating. But the M profile is set up for max power and max torque, fsck all other parameters.

I think there is also a HUD that turns on. My car has a HUD and i dont know how i'll go back to a car without one.

Basically some people wouldnt want M mode all the time for reasons already listed. I personally would always drive in M mode, but thats just me. Although I prefer the look of the last Gen M5s...more sleeper-like.

This can be done on many cars with custom ECU's. I've seen cars with a three way toggle switch with maps for Economy, medium and High power.

The M5's ECU is touted as having the most powerful ECU in a production car (note Production, GEMS, etc I am sure produce more powerful models) and has access to all parameters as EyeMwing has said. This makes the M mode feature actually a very simple one to implement.

HUD as in text and meters in your windshield ? I didn't see that during Top Gear when he mentioned it.. so I was wondering...

oh yeah, the electronic goodies, too. I think it also actually shuts off the satellite navigation announcements.

It has a tach (analog style) and digital speedo on the HUD. Projected down towards the bottom, onto where you'd basically just have hood when you're actually sitting in the seat. Easier to look there than to look at the cluster, and still unintrusive. And it has all the information you REALLY need.

If it shuts off the lighting to the cluster, except for essential messages, that WOULD totally own.

Not sure on that. Go test drive one 😛

HUD, isnt that what Gordon Freeman gets when he dons the HEV suit?

Seems kinda uneccessary for a car...isn't that what the speedo panel in front of ya is for?

if you're going to buy a new M5, at least talk to the people at chrysler about their prototype supercar, which spanks the M5's ass for the same price 😀 (0-60 in 2.9s, 248mph max speed, quad turboed V12, and it runs all on premium gas to boot)
