Question about the little "safely remove hardware" feature.

You know the feature WIN XP has, that gives the little system tray icon "safely remove hardware?" Is it necessary to actually go to the icon and stop the streaming or whatever? Does it hurt the flash drive or whatever, to just pull it out without stopping it? does anyone actually do this every time?
