Question about The Hunt for Red October...

You know the mini sub that is attached to the Dallas (the one they use to go over to the Red October)...when exactly did they attach it to the Dallas? At the beginning of the movie, the sub was hanging from the rafters in the shipyard. When Dallas was initially tracking the Red October (before Ryan came aboard), there was no mini sub attached. There were no other references to their being a mini sub or one hooking up with the Dallas until the crew is ready to go over to the RO and you then notice that the mini sub is magically attached to the Dallas.

How the f*&k did it get there? :D

Jack Ryan goes where he wants! How hard is that to understand?! He could have warped himself over to the Red October plain and simple, but he din't feel like it.

I believe in the time between the communication with Ramius (sp?) and the time when they had the final battle there were at least a few days. So I guess they could have arranged something during that time...

The time between visual (periscope contact) with Ramius & the Dallas and the time the radiation alarm went off was 20 hours. In that period, it was of my understanding that the Dallas was going to rendevous with the RO at the specified trench.

So if that is the case, how was it possible to get the mini sub to Dallas?

In the movie, it probably came from the Frigate that fires it's gun to warn Red October not to try to run.

Remember the Dallas gave the location for the sub to go to to defect, so they Should have had other units waiting for the rendezvous.

It just seems to me as though it would have been a LOT more coherent if they had actually shown the mini sub being dropped off at the Dallas instead of it magically appearing :D

Welllll, since you asked, I might as well tell you. I'm an engineer and I work for a nuclear submarine manufacturer (there's only 2, so guess which one based on my profile). Anyway, I just so happen to be one of only 4 people who are involved with the DSRV (deep submergence rescue vehicle), SER (submarine escape and rescue), and SOF (special operations forces) diver support aspects of all four of the latest classes of submarines; Los Angeles, Ohio, Seawolf (including SSN23), and Virginia. The DSRV can be air lifted to it's required site in as few as a couple of hours, mating to the host sub takes considerably longer however. You just have to remember, it's a movie, people aren't supposed to be able to tell fact from fiction in the movies.

dude, this is the US Navy we're talkin about. You don't think they can move a sub from drydock in maryland (or virginia) to a place in the Atlantic that really isn't that far away in 20 hours. Jeez, the military can do sh*t fast when they need to.

Skip tells Ryan that it can deploy anywhere in the world in less than 24hours and Ryan's plan for boarding the Red October is formulated on the Carrier with the Admiral and Captain before he risks his ass having the chopper fly him out to the Dallas. At that point the DSRV is mobilized in case Ryan is correct about Ramius' intention to hand the sub over.

Jeez, kill me why don't you!!!:disgust:

I just asked why it wasn't referenced in the movie instead of just having the thing just pop up out of no where.

Yeah, I understand that. I've seen this movie about a hundred times...it's one of my favorites. I was just wanting to know HOW they got it there. I was wishing that they would have done something to tie it into the movie instead of it just popping up on the back of the Dallas later in the movie.

And THANK YOU pull my finger...that's interesting info indeed:D

Speilberg does the same thing you know, they give you everything about the movie's plot developement ealy on and only in hindsite do you see it! Come on, didn't you think to yourself the first time you saw the movie it was odd the way they covered the DSRV and what it was for? When I see stuff like that in a flick the light goes on and I say well, well, what have we here ;) Also I think your being to anal about it :p

:)

Yeah yeah yeah. I understand the whole premise clearly. But one minute, there's no mini-sub. The next minute. There IS a mini sub. I just like to see smoother flow :)

It'd be like me (let's say I was in California) telling you that I have a Ferrari, and that I can have it in North Carolina in 12 hours. Cut to scene with Ferrari in NC with no fill in.

HOW did it get there, what route, etc? ;)

I always found it hard to believe that a Scottish guy was playing a Russian submarine captain.

Good movie though.

Let me put it the other way. Hypothetically, it'd be like them saying in the movie that Ryan was going to the Dallas to communicate with Ramius. Then the next scene shows Ryan standing at the Conn in the Dallas. WTF?

But with the movie, you have the whole thing with flying Ryan out there in the helicopter, jumping in the water, yadda yadda. That's better.

That's the way I see it with the mini sub. It would take less than a minute to show the thing being flown out there and docking with the Dallas.
