Question about the gas pedal on a 07 VW Jetta

So last night I drove my girlfriends VW Jetta home. It was the first VW I've ever driven. I was very surprised as to how stiff the gas pedal felt. Compared to my 03 Chevy Impala I had to really press the pedal to get the car moving. Is it like this on all VW's? Is there a reason they designed it this way? Is it something that is adjustable?
 
Never felt that on any VW's I've driven. Would suggest that there may be something wrong with the pedal if it's quite stiff.
