Question about the fan with a boxed p4

I am working on my first computer, and just came upon something that doesn't quite follow with what I've learned.

I got a pentium 4 2.26ghz processor, but the heatsink has no thermal tape and the instructions don't include anything about glue (which I got with the case I ordered from PC Power and Cooling). Should I use the glue or is that black thing on the heatsink (where the tape would normally be) just something I don't know about?

Also, I have to admit I'm a little worried that this fan will damage the motherboard because it's so heavy. What are the odds of this happening?

use thermal paste from dick smiths or something only a few bucks. Dont run without it especialy if overclock. The fan is heavy but it even scaryer clamping it in place. But its like that for stability.
Just wack it in and clmp down with about 1mm of thermal paste. Make sure its paste and not super glue lol...

The black thing is the stock thermal coating. It should work fine for running that processor at stock speeds. Alot of poeple on this forum are overclocking. They usually remove the stock thermal pad and use something like Artic Silver(ASII).

if you plan to do any overclocking (and i dont see why not with that cpu....) use either arctic silver 2 or arctic silver 3
either one of those will work

Around these parts... yes :D but we are mostly tweak freaks in here. The power isn't the means to any particular end. It is the end!

Ahh, I understand :D

Maybe with my next computer.. At the moment I'm just trying to get the hang of this, and I've had enough tweaking for the time being (I've spent the past five or six years tweaking an old computer just to keep it running - toward the end it was an abomination..).

also 2.26b's were (for the most part) awesome overclockers, thats why i am saying "and i dont see why not with that cpu"
2.7-2.9ghz was almost normal but with stock cooling 2.5-2.6 may be possible as well if not more

The fan is fine. Its quiet, efficient, and you already have it. The thermal pad if also fine. Intel is a BIG company, they know what they are doing. I would bet that their designers know a little more about HSFs than we do. There is no reason to spend $50 on a different setup. R R
