Question about the Dell 2001fp vs. CRTs

Hi.

I'm currently in the market for a new monitor. I have an ole' Dell 17" CRT from '98. I'm looking to upgrade to a panel LCD. I play a fair amount of games, including the new, VERY SCARY, Doom 3. I've read that most LCDs have slower response times, but the 16ms of the Dell 2001fp is supposed to be pretty good. To those of you who may have a Dell 2001fp, how do you like it? Do games, esp. fps run well on it? What are the color options, can you get up to 32-bit, or is it limited to 24-bit? I know a 21' CRT would be cheaper and have better features, but they are so damn big (depth wise). Any thoughts to help make my decision easier?

Question about resolution too... it says the Dell 2001fp is capable up to 1600x1200. Do you have to run it at that res? Or is 1280x1024 alright?

Don't own the Dell, but do have a 21' Sony. The 2001fp is the best gaming flatty u can get. A lot of people have been raving about them...personally, I have the desk space...so a CRT is for me. I dont think u can go wrong with the 2001fp for gaming though

LCDs don't like having their resolution changed. Either you scale or distort the image. 800x600 will be fine on a 1600x1200 panel, but other then those two resolutions you're pretty much SOL.

Ben is correct. You need to play at LCD's native res in order to get the best possible picture. That means 1600x1200 for 2001FP which requires powerful videocard to game at that res. But honestly, if you're heavy gamer, you should stick to CRT unless you have a particular reason why you can't use it. A good CRT still can't be beat for gaming.

The Dell 2001fp is capable of 1600x1200 w/ 16ms response time and decent everything else. All other resolutions except for half of the native resolution will look like crap, all blurry and stuff. ewww, you don't want that.

CRTs produce color better and have better response times, however the color difference probably isn't going to be noticeable at all and what's left is response time. 16ms or 62.5fps max. is the most you are going to get out of that baby.

CRTs have the option of going higher, but at 60fps, that's pretty decent.

If you want a smaller resolution, you will have to go with 17inc flat panels that do 1280x1024. Small monitors with smaller resolutions won't have 16ms displays.

17in is probably the better buy because it's cheaper and will give you better IQ and wont take much performance from you to run at native res.

You'll ultimately have to decide. If you can't spare the space, though, there really is very little reason to consider a CRT over an LCD.

Ok, so you "should" be in native res for desktop. But do you notice the scale difference in games as well? Say you want to run at 1280x960 instead of 1600x1200... will the distortion be that bad?

2001 is amazing.

If u pair it with a nice card like a 6800gt, you WILL be able to run practically everything at 1600x1200.
For doom and other uber intensive games, u can always frame the pic at 1280x1024 with no scaling artifacts. It will be a smaller pic, but it should look fantastic. Ive played with this monitor at work, and even scaled images of 1280 to 1600 isnt that bad.

Great gaming panel.

When you play off a native resolution in a game, it gives the free AA effect. Picture looks good, but won't be as crisp overall.

Thanks for all the responses. Especially the ones that reinforced getting a 2001fp as a good thing. Cause I ordered one and should get it today or tomorrow! woooo!

I have one and am enjoying lots of real estate goodness. However, mine came with two stuck pixels and I'm still debating on whether or not to send it back. I hardly notice them, and returning it would be such a hassle... BUT - it annoys me just to know they are there. Plus, a replacement might have THREE or more stuck pixels. Ahhh, what to do...

Love it otherwise!

My first 2001fp had terrible backlighting issues, along with one stuck green pixel. The second unit had perfect backlighting, along with 15 stuck pixels. I am in the process of getting a third.

Otherwise, gaming on the lcd feels great. 1024-768 scales pretty well on the 2001fp in doom3 on a 9700 pro.
