If one just has high speed cable internet. Could they unhook the cord from the modem and hook it up to a tv for basic cable? 😱

IF THEY HAVE NO OTHER CABLE TV SERVICE. Just the internet...

Depends on if your cable guy put the filter on the line like he was supposed to. We have internet only and cannot get any channels when hooked directly to the TV. However, they are coming tomorrow to install HD service. It's only going to cost me $15 extra per month. Right now I am paying $35 for internet.. but $15 of that is because I have JUST internet. My monthly bill after this should be $50.

Is there anyway to tell if theirs a filter on the line? Right now im looking to drop some services

If your cable comes from a pole, you can easily tell by figuring out which cable is yours and look for a silver barrel.. about an inch thick and between 1 and 3 inches long. Sometimes, lazy cable techs will install it on the box at the back of your place.

We had 3 filters when I worked for Charter Communications. Those that block internet, one that blocks ALL tv channels and a filter that blocks all channels above the standard basic tier, around channel 24 and up.

They put a filter on it here, at the street level. I removed it once, and then it suddenly re-appeared and I got a letter in the mail.

I just remembered that some cable systems have what's called a "smart tap". They can provision your service from the office and allow only certain services to even get to your tap port.

I did that back in 2004. I only got maybe 10 channels, but who cared? It was free.

Yes for one house I lived in 5 years ago. No for my next apartment.

May have everything to do with how your ports are hooked up where the cable comes in the house or some other setting the cable installer controls.

It has to do with if the installer put a filter in. Cable companies can block all video, just expanded video, or no video.

So the answer to the OP's question is that he shouldn't.

at my place they put a filter to block ALL channels on the line from the splitter that goes to the cable modem, and on the other lines (that go the TV's) there is no filter... they get 1-99, basic cable.... there used to be filters in place to block movie channels but they've since moved all the movie channels to the digital cable tier, and i only have one digital cable box, and on those it shows "channel blocked" for the movie channels..
