Ok, let's see if I remember.
Joseph (he of the coat of many colors) was sold into Egypt by his jealous brothers, who then took his coat, stained it with animal blood, and showed it to their father, Jacob (Israel) who then believed Joseph was dead. Now, of course, being the family of Jacob (Israel), these are God's chosen people.
Time passes, Joseph becomes prominent and powerful in Egypt, having among other things foretold of a coming 7-year famine (he interpreted the King's dream about fat and lean cattle) which he then lead Eqypt in preparing for by storing grain, etc.
The famine comes, and Jacob's family struggles. Jacob sends some of his sons to Egypt to see if they can buy food, Jacob recognizes them, eventually they are reconciled, and he invites his whole family to join him in Eqypt.
Time passes, their descendants (the 10 tribes of Israel) are oppressed/enslaved. They are, however, God's people, and he wants them free. So Moses does his thing.

Actually thinking about it and the whole fact that God loves everyone and has given us free choice, it was kinda messed up thing to do to the Egyptions, considering that it disrupted their whole way of life. Slavery was a basic tenent of their society and not unheard of in those times.
