I just read about ATi releasing a video card which is the 4890 running at 1 ghz. Does this speed, coupled with DDR5 memory, mean that the Ati card would be faster in games than an Nvidia GTX 285 SSC model? Forgive me if it's a dumb question but I haven't been keeping up on the latest video card news. Thanks for any help.

It seems like at lower resolutions, yes, at higher resolutions, no.

Hrm, judging from the anandtech benchmarks, I'd have to disagree. Even a 702MHz GTX285 will probably lose to the 1000/1200MHz HD 4890. But, anand didn't include such a videocard, so it's a 'guess'. Either way, both cards will be pretty close either way. Even at 2560*1600.

Thanks for the replies. Are these Ati cards out now? If they are, I might pick one up.

It's not likely that you'd notice much difference between your GTX285 and an overclocked 4890. Just so you don't try and 'upgrade'. They'd definitely be a 'sidegrade'.

You are correct, I was reading the wrong row. Looks like the 1GHz/1.2GHz clocked 4890 has a significant lead over the GTX 285 (except in L4D). I'd be interested in seeing a wider selection of games though. Still, if they offer it for ~$250 it'd be a great deal.

Ok, thanks. I was debating getting one for my cousin. I see what you mean though.

 For a different build they certianly make sense as the two are very close, but the 4890 is cheap. I wasn't sure if you were replacing your 285 for one, that I wouldn't do, but for a new build I'm sure you'll be happy.
