im planning to get the antec sonata and i was wondering what do the two blue lights indicate. I heard theyre cool but can be very blinding. The blue lights are on the sides of the front accessible usb and firewire panel.

i have one

they are always on, they are just for decoration. they plug into a molex plug. they are very bright, but only if you look straight at them. the result is that i have 2 overlapping blue circles (sorta like headlights) on my dorm wall at night. you can unplug the lights any time you want if you choose to

hope this helps

ghettoreb: the two blue lights are just for looks? You mean they don't indicate nothing, except for power?(obviously if they light up, that means the system is on).

PS: For anyone who has the antec sonata, can i have your opinions on it. I hear its a really nice looking case and quiet, but does it perform?

Yeah, there just for looks, I was contimplating wiring them up for power and disk activity, but I imagine they'd draw too much juice if that would even work. My other cool thought was to run them off the variable speed line from the power supply so you'd have a visual indicator of how fast the fans were turning, but that would probibly exceed it's power rating too, or not work somehow. Hey, it's a cool thought..

Overall, it's a great case. I'm not impressed with the cooling, but that could be my setup. I have an IC7-G, which does not report temps quite right, err's on the high side, a p4 2.4@2.9gig, a gig of 3200LL, an ATI All In Wonder 9700Pro, a SB Live Audigy 2 EX, two WD Raptors, and two WD 200gig SE's, and a cd burner and a DVD burner. I added a comp-usa thermaly controled front fan and am running the rear fan off non-controled power line, so it's full speed all the time. And a big copper zalman heatsink with an 80mm fan hung over it setup, also an Antec truepower 430watt PSU.

That's a lot of stuff throwing off a lot of heat, so it's hard to say. Nothing's *too* hot, but it's warmer than I like. If you use all the thermaly controled leads for the fans and such, it is indeed pretty darn quiet.

The finish is beautiful, the interior is well made, but a little cramped with all this cabeling and such.

In retrospect with what I was trying to acomplish with this rig, I'd probibly buy some little cube thing, or get a larger tower and just live with it.

But it is a beauty, is fairly small and quiet, and darn fast.

:)

yea ive heard on quite some sites that the antec sonata is not the best for ventailation. But like you said, a fan on the rear and front as well as a nice hsf should do the job. Right now, my views are set on either the slk3700amb or the antec sonata. Its quite apparent that the sonata is the best looking one but i have a few concerns. I need a case that is small and not too space consuming since my desk is small. im wondering what other people have to say about these cases. Which one should i choose?

If the slk3700amb is much cheaper and your not really looking to build a super quiet box, and it will fit where you want it, I'd get it.

The Sonata is darn nice, but if quiet is not important and shiny black is not important, I wouldnt bother. Drive cable routing is a pain with all four drives in there little slide in holders, and it's kinda warm. Never used the SLK, but it looks a little more open and standard inside.

What all are you planning to have in this system your building?

This is my tenative system. I havent even bought the parts yet but planning to sometime next week. Most likely itll look something like this:
Asus P4c800-e
Pentium 4 2.4c ghz ht 800 fsb
Corsair Xms 2x pc3200 512mb twin pair
ATI Radeon series (havent decided which one)
Seagate 120gb 7200rpm sata hard drive barracuda
Western digital 36gig raptor 10000rpm

And of course one of the two antec cases.
Im planning to have 2 drives right off the bat but i do wish to add more in the future.

i bought the antec sonata today but ti's still sitting in box as im waiting for the rest of my parts from newegg, svc and excalibur.

Im very worried about overall temps and the ability to cool my hdds in the front. What's the best solution for the front fan? Something big and pushing cool air into the front but not loud.

rest of the computer is gonna be ..

Barton 2500+ SLK800A and 80 panaflo
Radeon 9700 Pro
NEC 1300A DVD+/- R/RW
Plextor 40x12x40 CDRW
512 MB Corsair XMS
3 hdds ..

Running SATA drive cables is a little easier in the sonata because there smaller, and you can do it with regular ide cables, but it's tight. A lot depends on where your ports are on the motherboard with this case I believe. My ide portts and sata ports are on the lower front side of the board, right near the drive trays of the sonata, so it's a little more bearable. If they were elsewhere it might get to be a real pain.
There's room behind the drive tray's, but not just a heck of a lot.

Also, thinking about it, if your not worried about noise, I think you can make the Sonota cool OK, it's just that quiet thing, which is a big selling point.

ramses: the antec sonata comes with a truepower 380w ps. i know since the empahsis is on silence in this case, the ps comes only with one fan. Should that be a concern for my ps? How many fans usually are on a below 400 ps?
anybody with experince on power supplies can answer this question. On a 380watt ps, how many fans are there usually on the ps?

got my case today and promptly ordered a low speed 120mm Vantec fan. Should keep the 4 hdds nice and cool.

I just built my own machine using this case and over all, I'm impressed. This case isn't small... I guess it's slightly larger than medium. It's slightly more wider than most. I like the quietness, I don't mind the blue LEDs, however... I hate how fingerprints get on it so easily! But that's all.

I like my Sonata. Not much to say really, it has been said already. There is alot of useful information in threads here at AT, at SilentPC Forums, and at ars (linked below).

If you are concerned about the hds temps, you should do some modding. It isn't serious modding, only removing some part of the front bezel. I really can't remember the details, maybe it was here. If not, it probably was in some of the Sonata threads over at SilentPC Forums.

I have a sonata (with the front fan installed) and I have to say the air flow is not great.

the Sonata PSU has larger heatsinks to dissipate the heat better. I replaced the stock PSU fan with a panaflo L1A, it moves less air and is warmer now but nothing wrong with it. Extra fans in ~400Watt PSU's aren't really necessary IMHO. Like the vantec 'stealth' PSU, three fans? the cfm is not even additive, if they designed the PSU so poorly that it needs three fans i definitely wouldn't buy it...

i wish they front blue lights came with a switch to turn them on and off. At night they are pretty bright.

For a little better airflow cut some of the plastic off the sub-bezel.
