first time poster, long time reader. over the past year this forum helped me decied what parts to get, when i built my new system a few months back.

heres my question, i have the 74gb wd raptor, its in my system now, works fine but down in the task bar i see the usb icon, like where you plug a usb device in it tells you its there at the bottom. Well its there for my hard drive, is this what should happen? When i click on the usb icon it says 74bg ws hard drive, if i click on it, it says i can turn it off to remove it.

my specs are:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ ClawHammer
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra
eVGA 256 Geforce 6800GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express
CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400
Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150
Thermaltake Silent Purepower ATX 480W Power Supply
PLEXTOR Black IDE DVD Burner Model PX-712A
WinXp Pro

my system works fine, no problems with anything. I play Battlefireld 2 all on high with no problems. I plug in the logicteck joystick works fine, and the icon shows up under the icon for my hard drive in the usb device area. All I'm wondering about is if this hard drive should show up and be found in the usb device box. I pluged the WD secure plug(the blue one) in the hard drive and into the SATA spot one on the mother board. When i was doing the xp install, xp found the hard drive right away with no problem. Just the usp icon at the bottom with the hard drive in it.

I want to make sure i'm using the hard drive to its fullest extent. thanks again for your help.

That's normal, XP sees it as a removable drive. Obviously you should not remove it while you're using it.

Yep. Some boards use SATA as plug n play, so if you don't have a drive in RAID or with the OS installed on it, you can hot swap them.
