Question about the 74GB Raptor

I dont need more than 74GB of storage for now. Right now, I haven't even filled up my 30GB hard drive. So I need only one drive. Is the 74GB Raptor reliable? Is it stable, or is there a greater chance of data loss with this drive because it's 10.000 RPM?
 
1.2 million hours? lol. thats over 130 years. I don't think that drive (nor I) will even be around in 130 years.
 
So the chances of data loss will be around the same as any other hard drive, say a Seagate 7200.7 Barracuda Serial ATA?
 
I'm interested in any opinions on this drive as well as I'm considering making the purchase. The reviews I've read are unbelievable and I'm working on slowly upgrading my PC piece by piece...🙂
 
I've got one and many people here will tell you its not worth it (for the $) and performance is not huge over a 7200 HD. Its what I wanted and I like it a lot. It IS louder than the 7200's but load/seek times are reduced by several seconds if that makes any difference to you. Same warranty so if ya got the $ and want it than get it.

I don't think so.

1) The Raptor is based off of SCSI technology, isn't it? That's made for performance, but more importantly, reliability.

2) WD doesn't offer 5 year warranties on any of its standard hd's.

3) Sort all hard drives on Newegg by "Best Rating". The Raptors come up at the top. Unreliable drives don't get good ratings...


I agree with JBDan. I love my 74gb Raptor...the speed is great, and I don't think it's noisy. My Seagate 120gb 7200.7 is much louder at idle because it constantly emits a high pitched whining noise. Some people can't hear it, but my ears are fairly sensitive, and it really bothers me. The frequency is comparable to the high pitched noise most TVs make.

My Raptor is silent when idling. The seek noise is immense, but I like seek noise. With a quiet case such as the Antec Sonata, I doubt the seek noise would be so bad--most of the noise from my Raptor results from the drive heads literally shaking my case's front and side panels. By holding the case panels, I can quiet the noise a lot.
 
I've read so many review for the Raptor, and it sounds like an awsome hard drive. I've also heard many times that it's not worth the money. I'm just going to pretend I never heard that, lol. Time is money. Five seconds difference may not sound like much, but it adds up. Also, things install faster. It makes for a much more responsive system - not by much, but if I can afford the hard drive, I guess I'll get it. I'm building the system in my sig, and at just under $2000, it fits my bill.

It's worth every penny 🙂

This past summer I built a nice A64 based computer for a friend. I designed it to be a quiet gaming machine, so I used an Antec Sonata with a 2nd Vantec Stealth 120mm fan and a Samsung 120gb SATA 8mb cache hd (quietest hd I've ever used--practically inaudible). At the time, his computer felt faster than my own AXP 2500+ and WD400JB by a great margin. After I upgraded to a 74gb Raptor last week, I happened to use his computer for an hour, and my AXP2500+ now feels faster in Windows than his A64.

In other words, the Raptor feels like a major CPU upgrade.
