question about the 6 pin adapter that came with my X850XT...

I got a X850XT and it came with a 6 pin molex adapter, there are 2 4 pin molex connectors, one male and one female, do both have to be plugged in to get full power?
 
No, just one. The male is so you don't lose a connector, but you really should not plug it into anything else. Let the card have a molex all to itself.

If you have a newer PS, it may already have a 6pin PCI-E power connector that you can plug right into the card.

Ideally, you want it to have it's own juice, but you will most likely be fine. If it's not enough power, the card will just be unstable. If that is the case, just disconnect the floppy. How often could you possibly use a floppy anyway?
