Question about temps for a 2.4c on IS-7.

I am running a 2.4c on an Abit IS-7 (latest BIOS) and am having instability issues. The guy I bought it from in FS/FT guarenteed it stable at 3.1 GHz. I cannot even post the chip at that speed, however I've been tinkering with 3.0, 2.95, and 2.9 and still haven't gotten the setup reasonably stable.

I've eliminated the RAM as an issue as it is PC3500 DDR and I can run stable at 2.6 GHz 1/1 ratio with the ram at 433, however not at 3.0 GHz 4/5 ratio with the ram at DDR 400. I've tried moving the PCI dividers to put them under spec to ensure that was not the cause, however that yielded no better results.

My temps at 2.9GHz under full load are about 56 degrees C and around 44 idle. How does this compare to other chips? This is running at 1.55v (however Winbond reports this is actull around 1.50 under load). Should I attempt to increase the core voltage since Winbond is under reporting to gain stability? From what I've seen these temps really aren't THAT high for this overclock. What is the voltage ceiling for safety on these chips? Would 1.575 or 1.60 still be safe? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Check the settings for the ram. The temps sound about right for an Abit board.

I know I had to set 3 of my ram settings to auto and 2 to disable. (Can't remember the names, but it was auto, auto, auto, disable, disable.)

If this wasn't done I couldn't even oc to 3ghz. Now I can o/c to 3.4.

I'm sure you'll find your answer here:

Thanks for the info, I'll look into it. I just can't understand it being the ram when the ram will run faster with the proc at a lower speed and be stable, but I will check it out none the less. :)

Link was very helpful, thanks! A few questions for anyone who knows the answer and anyone else who cares to know:

- What is "GAT" and what do those settings do?
- What does the NB strap accomplish and what should it be set to?
- Where to you lock the PCI/AGP at 33/66?

GAT = enable, enable, disable, disable
NBStrap = set it to PSB800
Lock the PCI/AGP to 33/66
Some of these canterwood boards do not like running over 250FSB

Ok, I finally resolved my issue and it was quite rewarding. For those of you who might be having similar problems, I'll post my BIOS config and hopefully it will serve as help for you. :)

What the issue ended up being for some reason was just at tiny ram timing setting, it detected my ram as 2-5-3-3 but it was botching memtest (even though it was not doing this at lower clock speed, same mem speed can't say why) but I just changed the 5 to a 6 so I'm running 2-6-3-3 and it was rock stable at default voltage. I'm now running at 3.2 GHz stock voltage and it's been stable encoding divx and running 3dmark all last night. :) Here are my settings basically:

FSB: 267
DDR: 4/5 (running 428MHz at 2-6-3-3)
Mem volt: 2.8
CPU volt: 1.52 (it's set at 1.575 but the motherboard appears to undervolt)
NB Strap: By CPU
PCI/AGP: Fixed 33/66

Mem settings:

2-6-3-3

Gat:

Auto
Auto
Auto
Disable
Disable

The temps are about 55 degrees C at 3.2 full load, however I'm told this revision of the BIOS overreports around 10 degrees according to many reports on Abit's forum. I may update the BIOS. I also may take this chip higher soon as it does so flawlessly at 3.2 GHz and the ram is still within spec. :D Golden Dragon is good stuff.

I am thinking about getting the Is-7 and I am glad to see you got to 261fsb stable on that board...I had heard some scary stories of 255fsb walls....

265 seems to be my wall
but dont think its ram and more a function of the board
especially with the different dividers

I'm glad that I could help, guys. :)

(also there was a typo in my previous post, I was at 267 not 261.)

I'm now posting this from 272 and 3.26 GHz, I'm gonna shoot for 3.3 if this holds up.

Edit: 3.30 GHz now. Still no errors in memtest at DDR 448, CAS2.

275MHz FSB appears to be stable. Going to burn in with this for a while.
