Well seeing as how your multiplier of 6 gave you 2 ghz I would assume the 9 multi would yield 3 ghz, the stock clock, so yeah its supposed to be 9.

Don't know where and when you see the multiplier of 6, but that's what it will drop to under no load to save power.

To test, run CPUID and then put a load on the system - you should see the multiplier jump from 6 to 9 immediately.

My understanding is temperature reading on these chips isn't easy lol. However, for reference, I have a pair of systems running E8400s, and both show 42C at idle using Coretemp. An Arctic Silver freezer 7 Pro holds one system to 53C max during Prime95 runs; a Sythe Ninja Mini probably not well installed allows temps into the high 50s under the same conditions.

I have no idea what the real temp is, since these are much different than shown in BIOS (eg)

That was CPU-Z... he lowered the multiplier to 6, thats why it shows 2 ghz at 100% load, in any case I can't tell about the temps since I've never seen 2 ghz at load on an E8400 ^^;; if you could post the stock clock temps then I could tell you what range is safe.

What he was getting at is if you install cpuz it will show the mult at 6 when system is idle and will auto go to 9 its built in the chip and is speedstep. Power savings at low loads. I went through this with my first dual core. Do as 2boxer said to check it. Norm for these C2D chips unless you turn it off in bios.

try to idle at or around 40, and stay under 65 load

this is if your overclocking, and have accurate temp software.

i pushed the bus to 400 mhz

and this is the same set up idling

Core Temp and Speedfan are "generally" pretty good, they both read about 12C low for me and my setup, Everest gives me what im assumeing are the best Temps

rae you useing the stock heatsink and fan? temps seem normal if that is so

Ok you all didn't get what alfa did, he changed the multiplier to 6, that wasn't speedstep, 100% load with a 6 multiplier...in any case those temps are fine, a new cooler wouldn't hurt if you wanted to go for 4ghz on air.

that is on stock heat sink and fan, is it ok if i run it 100% almost 24 hours ?
also what is 'normal' temps for this CPU? any place i can dind them?
Thanks!

You could check the OC thread for the E8400, see who uses a stock cooler and the OC they get. No problem with running it at 100% load as long as the temps don't go above 90C, then you might want to back it down, but otherwise nothing wrong with it.

Artic Freezer Pro 7 here:

3.6 ghz (400x9).

46C idle 62-63C under load. With pretty low ambient temps (probably about 16-18C in the office right now). It's a bit hotter than I would like, but I'd much rather deal with the easy install and relatively low price of something like that artic freezer pro 7 than a monster like the tuniq tower.
