Question about Taisol HSF and PCTC vs. paste

I know that the PCTC 'pad' on the Taisol heat sinks is pretty much equal in effectiveness to Arctic Silver once it has been allowed to do its Phase Change. However, the pad on the heat sink is 'sized' for the Duron/Athlon cores, and I'd like to use one of these babies on a Socket 7 system. Since the PCTC always runs off the sides of the Duron/Athlon cores because there is intentionally too much on there, would there be enough spreading to effectively cover a SS7 CPU? Or would I be better off replacing it with Thermal Paste to get full coverage of the processor?

Thanks!

Where did you see that PCTC performed the same as AS? ON P3/diode tests, on a celeron2 936 @1.9V = 6C spread between AS and PCTC on a Taisol CEk733092. Yes, hte PCTC was phase-changed, as P3s can and do hit 58C.

On Socket-A boards, the "measured" change is small, but actual change is pretty significant.

As far as using it on Socket A chips, use grease... Having full coverage is much better than having half-pctc coverage.

I've heard the comparison between the Taisol PCTC and Arctic Silver from several different sources (and I actually misquoted, since they said it was within a degree or two, and not EXACTLY the same)... Due to the research you've done, I just may have to believe you over them! :)

Thanks for the input, and for the great work you do on this topic! :D

Edit: Since I don't have the available cash for Arctic Silver right now, would you still recommend cheap (e.g Radio Shack) grease over the PCTC?

Since you're using a socket-7 or socket 370 chip, RS grease should be okay.. It won't dry out on you.
