I know under windows after XP you couldn't just swap your drive to a new PC and expect it to work.

I am looking at setting up a new server, but want to add drives to my current one and want to be able to swap them to the new one. Will this cause any issues, could I prepare to avoid those issues?

Current server:
VIA C7 based mITX
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server
HD 640GB ***AAKS model
currently running SMB shares + Subsonic server

Intermediate step(?)
Move OS to 4GB CF card on CF to IDE card
add 2 port SATA PCI card ($25) (current MB only has 2 SATA)
4 2TB drives

I want to find an i3 board with 6 SATA and room for expansion (I also have an old AMD 3600x2 I could get a board for) and move the drives to that later. I will probably also upgrade to 10.04 or 11.04 also.

Would this pose any problems?

That version of Ubuntu is pretty old, but I think it should be fine. The only real gotchas may be /etc/fstab, depending on how the filesystems are referenced in there and the network card numbers (ethX) will probably increase but still work fine.

Honestly, you'll probably have more issues with the upgrade than the hardware move.

I went from an Intel P35 chipset (with a P4 541) to an Intel P67 (with a i5 2500K) without any problems on Fedora 12. Didn't do anything at all. Turned it off normally, upgraded, and it booted normally. Admittedly, I dual-boot with Windows, so it had a few Windoze boots between those events, but that makes no difference.

I went from an AMD X2 motherboard to an Intel i7 motherboard with no problems - system booted the i7 the first time with no errors or warnings.

Thanks, I'll be messing with it this weekend. If I separate the OS from the data share drives is it easy to re point to the data with a re install on the OS drive?

I set up config and all on a new setup, but never reworked the server in command line.
