question about suspend-to-ram (s3)

Bought a new system (horray!) and am using S3 to stand-by. My friends bought similiar systems, and one of them loves this feature as much as i do, however one is exercising much more caution about using it

he has no reason not to want to use it really.... but i have no reason to assure him it's safe...

so my question, is suspend to ram safe to use on a computer? Negative Effects?
(Btw I'm running amd64 3000+ / MSI K8N Neo-FSR / Kingston Hyper-X 3200 512mb)

I've used it for a couple years since the feature was introduced and my machine never had any problems.
