Question about surround sound

Kev

Lifer
Is it possible to get 5.1 surround sound using the standard red & white audio cables? Or do you need an optical or digital cable for that?

Because I'm using them on my 360 and the surround sound seems to be working, whereas I thought you needed an optical cable.

You can get fake surround sound by upmixing it with Dolby Pro Logic II or DTS Neo, but if you want the actual encoded surround then you can only get it digitally from your 360.

In short, get an optical cable for the best sound.

you need a digital cable for true 5.1 sound. That is 5 separate channels and a sub.

You're probably getting pro logic 2 or 2x or whatever plavor of pro logic is out there now. It does a decent job of pulling the matrixed channels out of the two channel source. But it is not true 5.1.

You'll do better in the Peripherals section but.....

You can get fake 5.1 if you use Dolby ProLogic, but NOT the original surround provided by the media, (DVD, game system, whatever).

EDIT: Damn, too late again with my post.

I think you can identify the non-Xbox owners here.

I heard that it had a multi-out port and you could plug in all kinds of speciality cables.
RGB, digital coax, whatever.

From the 360 you'll need to use an optical cable to get true surround. No cable is bundled but the port is.
