question about student loan

Im planning on attending a community college and im wondering if there are loans out there that you dont have to pay back, that can help you pay for the cost of the college, books, class expenses, etc. A girl i used to know recieved some kind of loan and payed for college and with the extra money she got, she bought a car and got into some not so good habits. Anyways, is the student loan the only way to go? Or is there another type of grant you can get from the state to help you pay.

If you're poor, you can get a grant. Besides that, the only way you're going to school for free is with a scholarship.

Those are called scholarships or grants, you pay back loans. In Illinois we get something called the Pell Grant, it's probably different where you live.

Scholarship, fellowship, grant, etc. are all free money.

Loans are usually just that - a loan. You normally repay loans. There are some rare loan forgiveness programs if you qualify. For example Perkins loans are for the families with the greatest need and can be forgiven if you work as a teacher in an area of need.

Pell Grants are federal, IIRC. Should be available in any state.
