Question about street racing...

I know of a place in our town where kids meet to go street racing once a week, I'm sure you're all familiar with these setups....parking lot full of riced out civics/golfs/nissans/etc with two or three serious cars, with some racing going on in the street off the parking lot.

Anyways, I'm not planning on racing anyone, nor do I condone street racing...my question is if I show up at one of these getups (just to check out the cars/show off mine), is there any way I could end up getting some kind of ticket/fine/trouble for doing this?

Yes. It really depends on the laws in your area.

What he said. ^^^ [edit: Minendo]

You can get citations for participating in an unlawful event, even if you're just watching.

Syracuse NY if anyone knows...
I do know the cops show up all the time at this place, but from what I understand they only give tickets for actual races & for tinting.

How would I get a ticket if I brake no crime? What would it say "Congregating?"

You could. I was at a meeting one time, I didn't have my car with me so I didn't run. The races were taking place on an empty road in an industrial complex. The owners of some of these factories had an agreement with the cops - they mounted cameras on the buildings so they could tell who was and wasn't racing. When the cops came and boxed everyone in, they took down everyone's info and asked "Were you racing?" and if you were, you got a ticket - if you lied, I guess you got a real big ticket.

I got out without a problem, the cop just let us go. :)

If you showed up at street races around here, without actually racing, and the cops came, they'd just tell you to go home.

You could, but probably not. It could be for unlawful assembly or something like that, chances are not.

Not around here... :( if its one sh!tty night... everyone's car gets impounded, that is if they're caught... and they'll deal with whoever was racing or not later... oh well...

Heh heh, around here is just like you described, except without the 2 or 3 serious cars. Basically a bunch of asshat ricers sit in the grocery store parking lot and turn their neon lights on and off, braggin about that 'new intercooler' that's under the hood that they won't open, until the donut patrol disperses them.

If you don't want to see the races, just the cars. And want to show of yours, wait for a car show, don't take the chances of car getting impounded along w/ fines.

How do you find out about these car shows?

Also does anyone know what's involved in going to an AutoX? I would be interested in doing that....

I used to go to races couple years ago. The cops always just showed up with just a couple cars for HUNDREDS of people. We used to meet at a Kmart parking lot first, and we would fill all of that parking lot with cars and would overfill into other lots.

Cops only gave tickets to people doing dumb things. They couldnt do anything to us ... until someone tipped off the news crews(right after Fast n Furious came out:disgust: )

That weekend there were more cops than people:frown::(

It depends on the laws in your area and how they go about cracking down on the events. In my experience if you are just watching, they probably won't go for you. That's not to say you're not breaking any laws, but the cops go for the actual racers first.

Couple tips if you go;

Take a plain, stock looking car if possible. Slammed hondas with illegal lights and stuff get picked out even if they're not racing and just driving by. They write you up for whatever they can to discourage people from going. Don't give cops a reason to pick you out.

When the cops come, and they almost always do, don't panic on your way out. Watch out while walking and driving for other cars and pedestrians that are hauling ass to get away. If you get caught, it's not the end of the world. It's certainly preferable to hitting someone or being hit.

Try not to be last in a line or caravan, again it's easier for cops to pick you out.

Watch for unmarked patrol cars. I once watched two cars rev at each other like no tomorrow, and the instant they took off, one of the cars behind lit them up. It was an unmarked patrol car and the two racers didn't notice what was behind them.

Sideshows are illegal in many localities and your presence may be contributing to illegal activity..tell your sob story to the judge.

Hmm....might have to swap out a few components before going...but even still my car won't really "blend in", even in stock form. Best bet is they'll confuse it for an RX-7 or something like that.
