I am going to throw a SCSI drive in my machine. Can I just copy the steam directory and does in need to be reinstalled when I reload the OS? The backup and restore seems like a waste of time and hoping to avoid it.

Sure I can just try it... but trying to plan ahead. Most games don't seem to write to the registry and can be moved around but have not yet tried it with steam.

You can keep all of your *.gcf files. [pay attention to the directory structure, and where each .gcf is] As for the client - you'll need to reinstall that.

You reinstall the client, exit, copy the .gcf's to their proper locations, and voila, no updating and you're back up.

Cool, thanks. Not a huge problem to reinstall... but definetly a time saver when the directory is 8+ gigs.

Also forgot to mention for everything under the gcf directory, you can grab that and c/p that too.
