Question about staplers

What exactly is the other setting on a stapler used for, the one where the ends of the staple are out instead of in? I don't think I've seen paper stapled using the other setting 😕

The little slit the individual staples goes into, well that piece of metal could be lifted up and rotated into another little slit. Best way I could explain it. Don't know what it's purpose is though. 😛

Most staplers (I think) have a metal plate where the paper gets stapled, you can turn it around and staple whathaveyou with the ends of the staple going out (the staple is almost straight).

I guess it would be easier to pull the staple out without ripping the papers.

This is called the Pinning/Stapling switch. It is located on the anvil. The pinning function is a carryover from the time before staple removers. It makes the staple form a relatively straight form. You can staple two pieces of paper together, then pull out the staple. Good for temporary fastening. It's kind of a paperclip competitor. You can also use it when sewing. Instead of using pins, you just staple. There is also one used on Hotchkisses and some Bates staplers that makes one end go in and one go out. You pull the side with the crimped down staple to get the staple out.

I believe the piece you are talking about is the staple "curler". Either the staple curls in or out depending on which direction it is situated. Most that I've seen are small square plates held on with a small spring that allows you to rotate them 360 degrees.

That setting is for the staples to be folded out instead of in. Glad to help.

That setting used to be used instead of paper clips.
