question about speeding tickets?

i was just pulled over but not given a ticket. cop said he was too busy and would have given me a reckless ops ticket.

my car is also registered out of state and he advised me that i register my car instate and get a license in state. he said he had my information and said if i dont do this quick next time he sees me he will pull me over and cite me for the reckless driving i performed tonight?

is he allowed to do that? i know he can bust me for out of state plates and license... but can he give me a rekless ops ticket from days or weeks ago?

edit... new question... i am on the title of the car and so is my dad. my dad lives in ohio i live in virginia. the car has insurance in ohio, titled to my dads address, and i am on it as a secondary. i actually drive the car here in viriginia and live up here. further i have a ohio drivers license... how does that work?

i mean, in theory i would only need to get a va license correct? the car is titled in my dads name and address because he is co-owner that lives in ohio and has residence in ohio?

nope

I don't think so. He's just trying to make sure you get the registration.

That might make him a jerk, except that he let you off. Do yourself a favor and register the car.

No, but consider this: for whatever reason, he turned you loose without a citation. You got a free pass. Get a local license and registration if you live there, and consider yourself lucky🙂

He would be in more trouble than you would if he tried to report you for something you did in the past.

Look at it this way ... the guy cut you major slack & all you need to do to return the favor is somthing you should have taken care of already.

In addition the officer may not be supposed to charge you with reckless driving weeks after the fact, but if he decides to its your word against his & the judge will be more inclined to believe him ... also he will undoubtedly hit you with multiple additional charges some of which will stick AND then you'll have to re-register the car anyway!

The correct course of action here should be obvious.

you need to get your license and registration straight, they all need to be in the state you live in. you'll end up with tickets if you don't fix it

Are you a college student?

Edit: You shouldn't be listed as a secondary driver if the car is located with you in Virginia and your dad, the "primary" driver lives in Ohio. You are the primary driver.

Edit2: Can you even register a car in your name if it's owned by someone else? I know that's essentially what you're doing when you lease a car, but leasing is specifically addressed on our registration form in NJ.

Let's not forget that if he does pull you over again, he'll hit you with the license/registration anyways. The next cop probably won't let you off with a warning, either.

Just get it done.

Even if he does give you a citation next time he sees you and you didn't do anything.. you're guilty unless proven innocent when it comes to traffic offenses. The court will take the cops words as well most of the time.

Actually, (not sure about VA law) but if the cop takes down all the pertinant details, he CAN write this ticket later if he so chooses. It's not like a few weeks or months would violate any statute of limitations...Could you possibly beat it in court if he did? MAYBE...but I doubt it. Virginia law gives you 30 days to change title and registration, and presumably the same to change your drivers licence. AFAIK, there is no exemption for college students driving an auto owned by their parents in another state...
