Well i went ahead and bought the Toshiba Satellite 3000-S353 for $1,369 shipped...think i got a fair deal 🙂 I know its 20G HD runs at 4,200RPM..is that the going speed for laptop hard drives? Can't wait to get this hope its nicer than the sony P3 700 i had..heres the specs:
Processor Mobile Intel® Pentium® III featuring Intel SpeedStep? technology

Speed 900MHz

Display 14.1" Active Matrix

Memory 256MB SDRAM

Graphics nVidia GeForce2go graphics controller w/16MB external DDR video memory

Hard Drive 20 Gigabyte

Modular Bay 8x max. DVD-ROM

Modem Integrated V.90/56K modem

Networking Integrated 10/100 Ethernet

FireWire i.Link (IEEE 1394) port

Yes, 4200 is standard for laptop hard drives. Some ultra long battery laptops have slower drives and some very high end laptops have options for 5400 RPM, but 4200 is standard.

4200 is the current standard. There are some 4900RPM drives out there and some 5400RPM drives are starting to appear. I know for a fact that the 4900RPM drives are "thick" 17.?mm drives which don't fit many modern laptops.

It's easily nicer than that sony. 4200rpm is standard for laptop HD's. I've actually never heard of any modern laptop HD's that run slower than that, but I guess it's possible.

Toshiba now has a 40GB 9.5mm drive that's probably very close to the speed of the 5400rpm drives thanks to its incredible density (35.7gb/sq in I believe).

<< The IBM 48GB Travelstar is an example of a 5400 RPM drive. Nice and large capacity too 🙂 >>

Yeah, that's the one I'm using in my laptop. It rocks 🙂
