Question about Speakers/amps

I'm trying to figure something out here.

I have a Carvin 4x10" bass cabinet for bass guitar. I have a 600 Watt Carvin Bass AMP Head for it. They are a pair.

The Amp is jacked up, so I haven't been using it. It's ok for recording as a pass through device, but the actual amp is sketchy.

My roommate has a 100Watt Acoustic (brand name) bass amp/cabinet with a single 15"

His amp has an external speaker output (8 ohms) for daisy chaining in another speaker cab.

He wants to hook the 4x10 up. The 15" is an 8 ohm speaker, and my guess is that you can hook up another 8 ohm cabinet and the amp will run at 100watts at 4 ohms.

My concern is 100 watts driving a 15" and 4 10" woofers is spreading the power too thin. The 4x10 was meant for 300 watts or more. (rms). I think they're supposed to have 75 watts minimum each speaker.

I'm thinking this would be bad for the cabinet. Cranking it up with not enough power will potentially damage the speakers because the amp will have to be cranked to give any worthwhile amount of juice to the speakers. and that means distortion, etc.

We tried hooking it up to see how it sounds. It's definately a bit louder, and it sounds ok, but the volume needs to be at 7-9 out of 10 for it to be any louder than the 100 watt cab by itself without the 4x10.

The general problem with maxing out an amplifier at loud levels, is that it will "clip" and produce high levels of distortion (mostly in the high frequency range). This can definitely blown tweeters. In your case, since you are just driving 10" and 15" speakers for bass guitar, you should not have a problem.
