Question about Soundstorm and speakers

I am not really sure how the whole Soundstorm system works. I have a NF7-S which has Soundstorm on board. Now from what I understand unless I will only be using Soundstorm if I use the optical connection., otherwise I am just using the AC97 codec or whatever it is. I am looking at getting some Logitech Z-5300 which does not have a optical connection. Does that mean I will not be using Soundstorm but just that other crappy codec?
