Question about sound volume

This is something I have been trying to fix on occasions over the past few months of having Ubuntu(now 8.10) on my laptop. In Vista the sound level is as one would expect, as it gradually gets louder/quieter with the control and full on gets pretty darn loud. Linux on the other hand feels like it's only operating 1/2 the level of Vista. I almost always have to turn everything all the way up to the max to hear it well. For the main volume control it seems only the top 1/4th of the slider controls any sound, much below that and it's practically muted.

This as one might imagine gets a bit annoying on various videos, like youtube.

So does anyone have any advice? I tried(although unsure how successful) at getting drivers to see if that would help. It's an Asus laptop and as far as I can tell it has generic Intel HDA controller. Perhaps I should try again?

I have 8.10 installed on my Asus W3J laptop. It doesn't seem that much quieter for me. You could try playing with volume controls for file types (within the volume controls manager).

I did that and it did not seem to help. It seems that normal OS sounds are better, and in many cases as are most audio players. So perhaps it's primarily a flash issue? It's still overall quieter than windows, but flash seems to take the biggest hit.

Give this a try. Start playing a flash video and then Launch the pulseaudio volume control, I think it may be in settings/preferences drop down menu (can also be launched by typing in "padevchooser" in a terminal) Once launched, there should be an applet that appears on your toolbar, right click on that and choose "volume control"

The flash video's volume control should show up in the playback tab, make sure the sliders at max.

I've always had this issue with Ubuntu. Asked about it on the Ubuntu forums with no help. Ended up ditching the PC speakers and hooked it up to my home system. Probably wouldn't work for most.

Right click the volume control icon and select "Open volume control". Make sure your PCM slider is turned up. If it's too high it may cause distortion, so adjust accordingly.

Thanks! I tried this, the volume for that stream is at max. I upped some other things and it just created an ungodly amount of distortion. So I'm just gonna have to live with it I guess.

I forgot what its called, but u have to turn up the volume in alsamixer (or something like that). open a terminal and type alsamixer or whatever. just make sure u dont turn it up too much that it distorts.
