I have a friend who is trying to connect this to his laptop.

The laptop does not have a sound input port. I know the above product uses a USB connector. The laptop has USB ports.

My (his) question is: Can the laptop record/recieve sound from an outside source, even though it doesn't have the inputs for it? Is the sound chip capable of recieving sound, if it wasn't originally created as so?

 Help me, help him. :)

For more info: He is trying to connect a record player to his laptop to record all of his LP's to cd. He has already purchased the pre-amp unit and software for this task. But recently found out his lappy is lacking a port.

It looks like a cheap version of the extigy. It should work fine. You don't even need a sound card with external devices like that. It will probably be detected as a USB sound device. That's how my optical to USB adapter worked on my minidisc recorder. It was for output, but should work the same way.

Thanks for the reply. The bolded part was exactly what I was wondering. He'll be glad to hear that. :D
