I don't know how exactly to go about asking this, but here's a randomass question. Why do some people, in class or whatever, put their foot on something (floor, chair, whatever) and start twitching it really fast? Does anybody know?

It's just spontaneous motor tone or involutnary sympathetic activity. People tend to do it more when they're anxious.

It actually has a noticeable effect on daily energy balance. Studies show that those who fidget tend to be thinner and hae more trouble putting on weight. The causal-link isn't firmly established though, just a correlation

I think it is anxiety. I used to regularly attend NA meetings and there is always a large group of people bouncing their legs. It seems to happen a lot more with the "new comers" and many of the old timers with lengthy clean time are able to sit still. There are exceptions to this, but it was a pretty obvious observation to make at the time.

I do it sometimes - it isn't voluntary, it just sorta happens. My mom and siblings do it too, must be genetic.

It's not anxiety, it provides a constant stimulus which helps the mind focus.

Many people do it, but it's much more common in men.

I sometimes do this, until my gf slaps me and tells me to stop it :(

the guy that sits in the cubicle next to me does it a lot.

it will be all quiet, and then you hear his feet go skip-skip-skillidy-dap on the floor.

he doesn't sit still for too long though... i think it's just a regular nervous thing.

the only time i find it annoying is at the theater and i'm sitting next to the restless leg person (or close to that person) as it tends to move the seats.

I do this. I don't really know why. My nurse of a gf told me that its not restless leg syndrome, its just a nervous\anxious habit. But I do it a lot, all the time, and I jokingly credit being skinny to always moving my legs.
