Question about socket processors.

either the mobo will beep saying there's no processor installed and you'll be ok OR the cpu will be fried and you'll maybe hear a beep and maybe see smoke

probably not a lot would happen, because the heatsink is smashing it onto the socket anyways. i wouldnt be surprised if it performed normally.
 
true...i kinda thought he was saying that the cpu was not fully inserted

but if it's really just that the latch isn't tight, yeah, it should be ok temporarily
 
No I don't mean the latch that secures the heatsink. I'm talking about the lever(should have said that the first time) that locks the processor into the socket.

thats what i was talking about, i understood you correctly.
 
If the latch isn't secured, the pins on the CPU won't be properly aligned with the pin array on the motherboard. You'll most likely get a post and a CPU error message. Theoretically nothing should be damaged, as the circuit pathways from your motherboard to the CPU are open.
