question about slingbox

no, the slingbox is simply used to transport a video signal from another source (tv, dvr, etc) over your LAN or via the Internet to a computer. It hooks up via S-Video, Composite, Coax, or with the new Pro model & a dongle, component.
 
I've always been curious, how does the slingbox work? Say I've a show stored in my tivo, my computer talks to the slingbox and streams it to my phone? Wouldn't the quality and speed depend on how fast my home internet connection is then?

Think of a slingbox as a video to ethernet device... It takes any video input source (DVR, Tivo, DVD Player, etc) and "slings" it out over ethernet so that one computer can connect to the stream either locally (on your lan) or outside your network over the internet. Locally, your limited to about 2000kbps. Watching it outside your LAN, your limited by the upload speed on your internet connection. Even at a low upload though (256k), the quality is decent. Obviously though, the better your upload, the better the remote viewing will look.
