Question about SLI

Hi there

as the title says, i do have a question regarding SLI. I never had 2 GPUs in my computers before, but now i have second thought about buying GTX 460 2GB. I already have 1GB version - Gainward GS Goes Like Hell - in my computer...
So is it possible to connect these 2 cards into SLI? I want the 2GB card for playing around with the new GPU rendering apps (octane, arion)...i can use both cards in the apps for rendering single image, respectively one card can be used as display adapter (the 1GB one) and second for actual computing...i suppose they do not need to be linked into SLI for this purpose...
However if i was about to buy that second card, i would indeed want to use it for gaming too, but really have no idea how the SLI works...
Obvious choice would be to sell the card i have and buy 2x 2GB version, but i would like to avoid that, cause of unnecessary complications (finding buyer, negotiate price, somehow manage whole transaction etc...) - if possible indeed

I belive if you have 2 cards with differing ram amount. In gaming mode (while SLied) both cards will behave as if having 1gb of ram.

I think this is also the case for AMD/ATI CrossfireX

Id also like to trow a warning about bad GTX460 SLI drivers. Crashes and general issues. Be sure you check out the appropriate forums before deciding on this. GTX470 in SLI seems to have less problems, if you can afford it.

Thanks for your answers...and warning. Still wonder what SLI actually is...is it the physical connection between the cards - that bridge or whatever is it called? Or is it something more than that? Does it work only in games?

BTW gtx470 does have only 1,28GB RAM... not enough for me

I have 0 problems with gtx 460 slI, never had a bsod before or after.
The forums I visit, have not noticed anything beyond normal problems. Couple sound issues and performance questions from people with p4's type stuff.
NV control panel is flexible, allows you to select all or either card for cuda use.
You would have only 1gb in games pairing a 2gb-1gb.
As far as apps that make use of sli ? I don't know of any personally. But I know they must exist at least for Nvidia pro cards/drivers, because they have sli connectors and build render farms with them.

You could put the 2gb card on top, the one your monitor is hooked to. temporarily disable sli when working with a app that can make use of the 2gb.
